About the artist
Vincent van Gogh was born in the Netherlands in 1853. He was influenced by Impressionist painters but his paintings are called post-impressionist. Van Gogh painted with intensity and emotion. The colors in his paintings became more vibrant and bright. He would sometimes apply the paint directly onto the canvas from the tubes leaving the paint thick with rough brush strokes.
Van Gogh suffered from mental illness that eventually cost him his life. His paintings were not at all famous when he died, but now are among the most appreciated art in the world. His paintings are also the among most expensive.
